COP26: Local climate action projects awarded National Lottery funding
Today [Tuesday 2 November] - as the UK hosts the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) - two community groups in Wales have been awarded £19,600 in National Lottery funding, to help them take action on climate change through its Together For Our Planet grant programme.
The Together For Our Planet grant programme is making £2.5 million of National Lottery money available to groups across the UK to coincide with the UK hosting COP 26 climate change conference. Groups can apply for a grant of up to £10,000 for their community up until 5pm on 18th November.
Community Heart Productions in Flintshire, and Manage Money Wales CIC in Pontypridd are using its funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK, to take local action in their communities to tackle climate change.
Community Heart Productions will use £9,600 to educate children and young people based around Flint, about growing food, creating habitat and helping wildlife in relation to understanding climate change.
Manage Money CIC will use £10,000 to expand the opening hours of their Community Sharing Shop in Pontypridd, where they collect donations such as clothes, shoes, toys, games, books, school uniforms, sportswear and equipment, small furnishings, and other non-perishable items.
Nick Gardner, Head of Climate Action at The National Lottery Community Fund, says: “Climate change will impact everyone, and this research shows people are worried. But there are many ways people and communities across the [area] can take action, as demonstrated by [project] and the great work they are doing thanks to National Lottery players.
“Communities across the UK have an important role to play in supporting the UK to get to its Net Zero target, and by taking climate action we are not only making significant environmental improvements, but are also helping people and communities prosper and thrive.”
The Together for Our Planet programme is open for applications until 5pm on 18 November 2021. It is awarding funding to help build on interest and excitement for COP26 by supporting a legacy of ongoing climate action projects in communities across the UK.
Since 2016, The National Lottery Community Fund has awarded £397 million through more than 6,000 grants which involve environmental action, including action on waste and consumption, energy, transport, food and the natural environment.
The National Lottery Community Fund distributes funding on behalf of National Lottery players who raise more than £30 million each week for good causes throughout the UK. To find out more visit www.TNLCommunityFund.org.uk
