Environmentally sustainable

Climate change is considered the “most pervasive threat to the natural environment and societies the world has ever experienced” (UN, 2022). While many environmental challenges are global, there is huge potential for UK communities to make a difference locally.

We’ll embed support for environmental action across all funding. And we’ll also invest in specific environmental projects, so communities can make changes that help support a healthy planet.

We’ll fund projects that:

• reduce carbon emissions and negative environmental impact
• create positive environmental impacts
• establish equality of access to the natural environment
• improve the quality of natural spaces.

Karen Healey from Creggan Country Park in Derry-Londonderry talks about the impactful environmental activities and education the project provides to support the local community, and why our renewed focus of environmental sustainability in our new strategy is vital.

It’s important that The National Lottery Community Fund continues to support communities to be environmentally sustainable. This will enable us to respond to local need and address a range of social, economic and environmental issues through grass roots action projects that really make a difference to people and the environment.
