A gardening project in Burgess Park, Southwark, yields more than fresh vegetables and fruit for the people with illnesses who tend the plot. People with conditions ranging from heart disease to mental illnesses grow in confidence, health and self-esteem from the Heart Garden project that has been fertilised by a £93,848 grant to run for the next five years. The project's basic aim is to provide participants with gentle exercise. But those who hoe in reap more than better health.
