Drought Mitigation Programme for South Madagascar - Prosiect
Trosolwg o'r prosiect
Southern Madagascar is dry and hot. Rural people here depend upon natural resources to live. However, frequent droughts and the loss of forest have led to annual food shortages in many areas. For three months of the year people have to survive solely on prickly pear. Communities are isolated with few doctors, schools or livelihood opportunities. As a result 75% of the population are below the poverty line. This project will re-introduce a crop (sorghum) that is more able to resist drought.
