Bride price is a widespread, deeply entrenched cultural practice in Uganda, in which the groom-to-be pays money or goods to the family of his bride. In itself it is not a harmful tradition, but it gives rise to serious civil and political rights abuse, including forced marriage, torture, abuse and forced labour, it is also one of the key factors in local poverty. The project aims to reduce bride price to a token gift, and thereby remove the cause of rights violations.
