People dependent on agriculture and livestock in Mali are extremely vulnerable to climatic changes. Those living on the least productive lands suffer even in years when the climate is favourable. In order to survive these people rely on accessing forests and common lands to supplement their income. Water is essential and communities without a reliable supply of safe water suffer hygiene related health problems and conflicts occur in periods of shortage.
