Strengthening Organisations

This funding is for organisations in Scotland, that we currently fund. We want to support organisations to try out new ideas and ways of working. Or to develop their organisation and improve their current work.

To apply for this funding, your organisation must:

  • currently have funding from us
  • work with people affected by poverty, disadvantage or discrimination
  • involve the people you support in designing how you work.

The work we fund must meet one of these outcomes

Organisations we fund are able to:

  • overcome challenges and plan for the future
  • try out new ideas and ways of working.

You can achieve both outcomes. But you will not improve your chances of getting funding by achieving both outcomes.

See what we’re hoping to fund for details.

We offer funding from £300 to £50,000. And can support your work for up to 2 years.

We’ll fund organisations of any size - including smaller organisations.

How to apply

Contact us for a conversation about your idea

  • phone us on 0300 123 7110 (open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday).

We’ll put you in contact with a funding officer in your area within 10 days of contacting us.

You do not need to prepare anything before this conversation. We’ll ask you about your idea and discuss if this funding is right for you.

If you’re eligible to apply for the funding, we’ll send you an online application form.

If it's difficult or impossible for you to complete an online application form

You can contact us if you have any communication support needs. We’re happy to talk about other ways for you to tell us about your idea. For example, Easy Read or accessible forms that work offline.

What information you need to apply

You can see a full list of questions from the application form.

We ask for the contact details, home addresses and dates of birth of 2 different people from your organisation. We need a different email address for each person

One person should be someone we can talk to if we have any questions about your project. The other should be a senior member of your organisation, who'll be legally responsible for the funding. Both need to live in the UK.

These 2 people cannot be related. Related can mean:

  • related by marriage
  • in a civil partnership with each other
  • in a long-term relationship with each other
  • related through a long term partner
  • living together at the same address
  • related by blood.

We ask for the legal name of your organisation. And its address. And what type of organisation it is

Check these details before applying. Also check any registration numbers if you have them – like a charity number or company number. It will slow down your application if these details are not right.

We ask for details about your organisation’s accounts

We want to know the date your accounts wrap up each year and how much income you have.

If you do not have yearly accounts because you’re a new organisation (less than 15 months old), that’s okay. We can still look at your application.

We also ask you to read and agree to our terms and conditions

You can read the terms and conditions.

Send us your bank statement

What we need

We ask for one bank statement dated within the last 3 months. So, we can check the account you want us to pay the grant into.

We'll not be able to assess your application if you do not have a bank account and bank statement that meet our requirements below and you’ll need to reapply once you have these set up. If you’re not sure you should contact us to check if your bank account and statement are suitable.

We need:

Our bank statement needs

The bank statement (or bank welcome letter if the account was opened within the last 3 months) must be:

  • uploaded as one single file
  • a file of 12MB or less in size
  • a PDF, JPEG or PNG file.

It should show:

  • the bank logo
  • your organisation's legal name
  • the address the statements are sent to
  • your bank's name
  • the account number and sort code
  • the date the letter or statement was issued.

If all these details are on one page, just send us that page.

Here’s a picture of the kind of bank statement we’re looking for.

What else we would accept

If you have a new bank account opened within the last 3 months, we can accept a bank welcome letter instead of a statement. The letter must confirm the date the account was opened and all the account details.

If you’re unable to provide a bank statement, we can accept transaction listings, if they include everything we’d expect to see on a bank statement:

  • the bank logo
  • your organisation’s legal name
  • the address your bank uses for correspondence
  • your bank’s name
  • the account number and sort code
  • date the transactions listing covers.

What happens after you apply

It normally takes around 12 weeks from when you send us your application to find out if you’re getting funding.

  1. We’ll consider your application

We’ll look at your idea and carry out checks on the information you provide us. You can find out more about the checks we'll carry out on your information.

We’ll contact you to talk about your application. And to get more information if we need it.

  2. We’ll tell you our decision in 12 weeks

If you’re not successful, we’ll tell you why.

If you’re successful, we'll email you with the good news. You can start your project as soon as you get this email, if you want to. And we’ll put the funding in your bank account within 14 days (or sooner, if possible).

  3. You can start your project

You should spend the funding the way you said you would in your application (unless we’ve agreed to something different first). We’ll check in from time to time to see how things are going. Find out more about how to manage your funding.

To find out how we use your personal data

You can read our data protection statement.

Reduce your environmental footprint

The National Lottery Community Fund cares about our environment and are always striving to manage our environmental impact. We encourage and support projects and communities to do the same. Learn more about how you can make your project or event more environmentally sustainable and perhaps save money at the same time in our guidance on reducing your environmental footprint.

  • registered charity
  • Scottish charitable incorporated organisation (SCIO)

You need at least 2 board or committee members who are not related

Related can mean:

  • related by marriage
  • in a civil partnership with each other
  • in a long-term relationship with each other
  • related through a long term partner
  • living together at the same address
  • related by blood.

All companies who apply must have at least 2 directors who are not related in any of these ways. This also applies to companies that are also registered as charities.

Who cannot apply

Who we cannot accept applications from:

  • organisations that do not currently have funding from us
  • organisations that already have this funding (Strengthening Organisations)
  • individuals
  • sole traders
  • organisations based outside the UK
  • companies that can pay profits to directors, shareholders or members (including Companies Limited by Shares)
  • organisations applying to more than one of our programmes for the same project over the same period. This is because you cannot get duplicate funding for something we're already funding you to do. It’s OK to apply to another programme if you've already had an unsuccessful decision though
  • one organisation applying on behalf of another
  • schools
  • statutory organisations
  • faith based organisations.

You can get help from support organisations - like your local authority or Third Sector Interface (TSI)

They may be able to give you support and advice on writing your application.

What we're hoping to fund

What we’re hoping to fund

To apply for this funding, your organisation must:

So to help us decide which applications to fund, we’ll look at what your organisation does and how it works. As well as what you’ll do with this funding.

Working with people that experience poverty, disadvantage or discrimination

We want to fund organisations that support vulnerable or excluded communities. We’ll expect you to tell us how your organisation works with these groups.

Involving the people you support in designing your work

We want to fund organisations that design their work with the people they support. We’ll want to see that you:

The work we fund must meet one of these outcomes

Organisations we fund are able to:

  • overcome challenges and plan for the future

For example by:

  • adapting your services when things change
  • improving how you plan and manage staff or resources
  • making your services or organisation more effective and efficient
  • improving your processes or technology.
  • try out new ideas and ways of working

For example by:

  • piloting something that’s worked elsewhere
  • increasing opportunities for people to have a say in your work
  • testing ways to help you reach different people
  • connecting with other organisations to share learning or resources.

You can achieve both outcomes. But you will not improve your chances of getting funding by achieving both outcomes.

If you’ll be working with children, young people or vulnerable adults

You need to have a policy in place that explains how they’ll be safe. If you get funding you’ll need to follow our expectations on safeguarding children and adults at risk.

The SCVO website has child safeguarding advice and information services.

What you can spend the money on

We offer funding from £300 to £50,000. And can support your work for up to 2 years.

We’ll fund organisations of any size - including smaller organisations.

We can fund:

  • part of your organisations’ overheads

We’ll fund the delivery of the project. And we’ll fund some of the indirect project costs

Also known as overheads. This could include things like rent or insurance. Or part of a salary for someone not working directly on the project. Like a senior manager or an office admin worker.

For example, the project you’re applying for could be half the work your organisation does. In that case, we could fund half of your overheads.

This is sometimes known as full cost recovery. Find out how to work out overheads in our guide to full cost recovery.

  • equipment
  • staff costs
  • training costs
  • transport
  • utilities
  • volunteer expenses
  • fees for specialist consultants.

Working with consultants

You should let us know if you plan to use a consultant when you contact us about your idea.

Using a specialist consultant can help bring new skills or experience to your organisation. We can fund you to work with a consultant if that’s what you need.

But be careful of businesses or consultants that contact you first. They may say they’re acting on our behalf, or that they’re our preferred supplier. This is not how we usually work.

When you’re looking for a consultant, you should try to get 3 quotes for the work you need done. We'll ask to see evidence of this.

You cannot use our funding to pay a consultant for writing your application.

We cannot fund:

  • retrospective costs
  • alcohol
  • contingency costs, loans, endowments or interest
  • paying someone else to write your application for you
  • profit-making or fundraising activities
  • VAT you can reclaim
  • religious activities (we can fund religious organisations if their project benefits the wider community and does not include religious content)
  • statutory activities
  • activities that help children or young people with their schoolwork during school time
  • overseas travel
  • projects that take place outside of the UK
  • activities that make profits for private gain
  • cash that will be given directly to individuals.
